Surfactants used in emulsion polymerization

Several factors in the process of emulsion polymerization and the characteristics of the final product are important in this way. The selection of environmental friendly and biodegradable raw materials is one of the factors that has been taken into consideration by the manufacturers of emulsifiers with increasing environmental degradation. Meanwhile, the replacement of current surfactants (as one of the most important raw materials in emulsion polymerization) is one of the most prominent issues in the world. For example, the use of nonylphenol ethoxylates, NPEs, has been severely restricted in Europe due to its destructive effects on aquatic life and its lack of biodegradability.
In this paper, at first a brief introduction to emulsion polymerization is presented and then the various types of surfactants and their role will be explained.
